She became greatly influenced by the surrealist movement during the Spanish Civil War in Paris where she fled, however at the end of 1941 Remedios Varo moved to Mexico City to remain in Latin America for the rest of her life. Varo was influenced by Francisco Goya, El Greco, Picasso, and Braque, her paintings had the resemblance to the Surrealist creations Giorgio de Chirico. The remarkable mature style of Varo developed after 1949 – She often worked in oil on masonite panels, her brushwork often involved many fine strokes of paint laid closely together. The works of Varo was influenced by pre-Columbian art, by a wide range of mystic and hermetic traditions, both Western and non-Western. The works of Remedios Varo Uranga are highly regarded in Mexico.

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter born on July 6, 1907 in the house known as La Casa Azul (The Blue House), in Coyoacán. Influenced by Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism the painter has achieved great international popularity due to use of vibrant colours in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of Mexico. At age six Kahlo contracted polio, she also suffered from spina bifida. In 1925 she suffered serious injuries in the accident, however the painter recovered but had to experience extreme pain for the remainder of her life. After the accident Kahlo began a full-time painting career. When she was immobile for three months after her accident Kahlo her self-portraits became a dominant part of her life (of her 143 paintings, 55 are self-portraits). Frida Kahlo was deeply influenced by indigenous Mexican culture, she also combined elements of the classic religious Mexican tradition with surrealist renderings. Kahlo became the first 20th century Mexican artist whose work was by the internationally renowned museum, The Louvre.

Leonora Carrington is a British-born artist, she is a surrealist painter and a novelist who now lives in Mexico. Carrington was born in Lancashire, England. She was sent to Florence where she attended Mrs. Penrose's Academy of Art, she also attended Chelsea School of Art in London and joined the Academy of Amédée Ozenfant. In the 1936 International Surrealist Exhibition in London Leonora Carrington saw Max Ernst's work and became attracted to the Surrealist artist before actually meeting him. In 1947 at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York City the first Carrington's important exhibition appeared. She was also the only female English professional painter that was invited to show her work in an international exhibition of Surrealism.
