Surrealism and Surrealism Painters in the Past and Today
The XX th century is full of events which to this or that extend have predetermined further development of the world. One of the events that had universal scope was cultural and intellectual movement called surrealism. The movement emerged as a reaction against World War I and it was also supported by Freud's psychoanalytical theories. The purpose of the movement was to change life through freedom. In painting such strive to freedom was expressed by direct expression of the unconscious, in literature it was automatic drawing. In terms of politics, the surrealist movement was close to communism and anarchism. The ideas of surrealism were carried on by various people and the movement turned into not cultural only but also into political and social revolution.
Surrealism works of painting were contrary to cubist movement paintings which put an emphases to form and content. The main idea of surrealism painters was to create their pieces of art with no conscious control, the images were confusing, the paintings revealed dreamlike fantasies. The techniques that surrealist movement has invented were used to achieve the purpose – to give way to unconscious mind.
Later on, within the movement two camps of surrealism painters were organized. The first group was drawn towards working with amorphous, organic forms, the forms that are expressive but non-representational. The other group depicted elements which made no rational sense. Such approach can be seen at the works of Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, etc.
As the movement was also influenced by nihilistic ideas of the Dadaist and French literary figures, all the surrealism works represent dreamlike fantasies, all the works have irrational style, while some of the works are more abstract. Among the most significant artists of that time the names of Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Yves Tanguy, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst and André Masson should be mentioned. The ideas of this generation of surrealism painters were not sunk into oblivion. Today's artists also share the ideas of this significant movement of 1920-30s of XXth century and there are also admirers of the style that enrich their private collection with contemporary surrealism artists' paintings.
Today's surrealist artworks are created in compliance with the traditions of the movement. A lot of painters being impressed by the events that take place in today's world transfer their thoughts onto canvas. Surrealism museums expose a lot of great pieces of art, among the works of modern artists there are a number of works of great talent.
