Surrealism in Arts

Surrealism influenced various arts, it was a cultural, artistic, and intellectual movement. The idea of surrealists was to liberate the mind emphasizing the critical and imaginative faculties of the "unconscious mind". The "sur-real", or "more than real", oriented toward the liberation of the mind. And this word «surreal» often used colloquially to describe unexpected juxtapositions. For many Surrealists, the orientation toward transferring everyday reality toward one that incorporates the imaginative and the unconscious has manifested itself in the intent to bring about personal, cultural, political and social revolution, and there were individual surrealists that regarded themselves with communism and anarchism.

The philosophy of the movement based on the belief in the superior reality of certain forms, in the omnipotence of dream penetrated into various styles and arts. The aim of surrealists is to free people from what is seen as false rationality, to revolutionize human experience. The term «surrealism» itself appeared in 1917 and it described the ballet Parade – a collaborative work by Jean Cocteau, Erik Satie, Pablo Picasso and Lonide Massine. Surrealism, a kind of super-realism, originated in the Dada movement. Centered in Paris, during the course of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s the movement spread throughout Europe and to North America, Japan and the Caribbean, by the 1960s it reached Africa, South America and much of Asia and by the 1980s to Australia. Many consider that the death of Andre Breton, the leader of the movement, mark the end of the movement, however there were another opinions.

Apart from literature, theatre, etc. Surrealism impacted music. Influenced by the style composers, Bohuslav Martinu, Andre Souris, etc. created their works: Explosante-fixe (1972), Ballet "Paris-Magie", the Operas "La Petite Sirne" (book by Philippe Soupault) and "Le Matre", etc. In terms of Surrealism and music there are also parallels found between Surrealism and the improvisation of jazz, and the blues. Surrealism in music went on developing, surrealists have also been influenced by reggae, rap and some rock or pop bands. Various musicians were impacted by the style of surrealism: Jefferson Airplane, David Bowie Brian Eno, etc.

The super realistic style, which "goes beyond" traditional conceptions of art or aesthetics, has been used by artists in various arts.
