Art style surrealism was developed in Europe during the World Wars I and II, the movement was influenced by Dadaism, works of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung and Austrian psychiatrist Sigmund Freud greatly. It was Andre Breton who introduced the movement with the help of his work «The Surrealist Manifesto». The ideas of Surrealism are rooted in the subconscious mind, in the use of visual imagery.

The difference between two movements, Dadaism and Surrealism, lay in the fact that Dada movement was a radical, non-conformist art form focusing on negation and denial, while Surrealism had more positive approach. Influenced by Freud theories Surrealism came to intrude the conventionally restricted zone of mind, unadulterated imagery. The movement had two types: Automatism and Veristic Surrealism. The Surrealism paintings belonging to the former demonstrated 'action' artistry, while the Surrealism artwork of last one type were focused on an artist's inner thoughts or subconscious, rather than the external visual reality.

The most prominent Surrealists artists were Giorgio de Chirico, Man Ray, and René Magritte and the most well-known Surrealism paintings created during that period were "The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dali, "The Red Tower" by Giorgio de Chirico, "The Elephant Celebes" by Max Ernst, "This is not a Pipe" by Rene Magritte.
