Painters of Modern Art Period. An Artists Gallery
In general, art created from the 19th century to the mid-20th century is known as modern art. The Painters of modern art period introduced changes into the techniques of painting, sculpture, and other media had been practiced since the Renaissance. Such innovations were rejected at first, but with the lapse of time the new styles settled into history to inspire new generations of artists. Modern art originated in the second half of the 19th century, when the revolts against the classic codes of composition began and the artists' views became more independent and subjective. The afore mentioned artists, Manet, Degas, and the representatives of the Barbizon School started to paint scenes of ordinary daily and nocturnal life.Renoir, Manet, Monet, Sisley, and Pissarro were the most well-known painters of Impressionist style. The subject matter of their painting was diverse: Old Master themes (Manet), landscape and the changing effects of light (Monet, Sisley, Pissarro), horse races, the ballet (Degas), idealized women and children (Renoir), etc. The post Impressionists painters, Cézanne, Seurat, Gauguin, and Van Gogh, were influenced by the interests and attitudes of the above mentioned painters. However, some features, such as total rejection of imagination and enduring aspects of reality were not accepted, post modernists focused on expressive emotional value using colors imaginatively and violently. The term post-Impressionism appeared in 1910 to describe the development of French art since Manet. They extended Impressionism introducing the emphasis on geometric forms, thick application of paint, distinctive brushstrokes and real-life subject matter into painting.
One of the first art historians John Rewald to focus on the birth of early modern art limited the scope of post Impressionism to the years between 1886 and 1892. Rewald focused on outstanding early Post-Impressionists active in France and their relations to the artistic circles they frequented or were opposed to. Now it is considered that Rewald's definition of Post-Impressionism term, concentrating on French art between 1886 and 1914 and re-considering the altered positions of some impressionist painters is best used.
From the beginning of the early 20th century color was supreme and it invaded the contours of recognizable objects. This was the period of fauvists, orphists, expressionists. Another styles developed after Impressionism were Cubism, Geometric Abstraction. A sort of modern art was created by Jean Arp, Marcel Duchamp, and Kurt Schwitters in the irreverent manifestations of the Dada movement. At the beginning of 1920s an art of social protest started which increased with the rise of fascism and the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Postwar modern art is associated with the US and a new art form known as abstract expressionism. In the 1950s the world became impacted by another movement, action painting. In the 1960s, when abstract painting retired from the stage, a lot of new movements and styles became dominant in art shifting modern art to contemporary.
These days contemporary artists keep on developing painting art, using techniques created long ago and introducing newer attitudes and approaches.
