However, oils is considered to be the leading medium of all painting mediums and oil painting process varies from artist to artist. As a rule, an artist mixed his or her own paints for each project. When oil paint in tubes became widely available in the late 1800s such portability allowed for plein air painting. New oil painters continue the traditions of oil painting and often use a brush made from a variety of fibers to apply the paint.

New art painters also use synthetic brushes that have come on the market in the past few decades. Paint is applied with a palette knife, which is a flat, metal blade. These days new art painters also use rags, sponges, cotton swabs, etc., some artists paint with their fingers. Artists of the impressionists era often used Alla Prima method – blending the wet paint on the canvas without following the Renaissance layering and glazing method. An oil painter would seal the work with a layer of varnish typically made from damar gum crystals dissolved in turpentine. New oil painters do not practice varnishing of their work usually and prefer to remain the surfaces varnish-free indefinitely.
