Impressionism Drawing. Impressionism Art Gallery
Impressionism movement appeared as a reaction against formalism and sentimentality of academic art. It is also considered that impressionism started modern art period. Impressionism was opposed to the painting techniques approved by the Académie des Beaux-Arts which set the standards of French art. Impressionists started to paint outdoors, figures and scenes from everyday life. The goal of impressionists was to achieve spontaneous rendering of the world using the effect of natural light on objects.Impressionists were concerned with the effects of light on an object, they used primary colors: red, yellow and blue and also green, purple, and orange. By placing short brushstrokes impressionists achieved effects of naturalness and immediacy. They considered that light tends to diffuse the outlines of the form, the colors of surrounding objects should be reflected into the shadows. The most prominent artists of impressionism were Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas and others.
Such characteristics of French impressionism took place in the 17th century, when the Dutch painter Jan Vermeer used a sharp contrast of light and shadow. The brushwork of Diego Velázquez in the 18th century and Francisco de Goya in the early 19th century was also similar to that of the French impressionists.
Impressionism influenced modern art greatly, the artists throughout the world were impacted by the style. The movement itself went on developing, newer techniques appeared. Thus, pointillism appeared – the entire canvases painted with small dots of color in a scientific application. Paul Cézanne, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh postimpressionists were greatly influenced by the impressionism drawing.
