Abstract Expressionism
Later in the 20th century Expressionism influenced a large number of artists and movements and evolved into Abstract Expressionism. The goal of the style was the depiction of emotions rather than objects. Abstract Expressionism is also known as Action Painting, mainly due to it's loose brushwork. Among the main important features of the movement is it's influence on the artists overseas – the style helped to emphasize the independence of American painting from European trends. The movement originated in New York under the influence of Surrealism, Picasso, and Miro art and many other artists who fled Europe for American during World War II. The main idea of Abstract Expressionism is to emphasize the accident and chance in work, thus a lot of attention is paid to the surface quality and texture and canvases size. All of the artistic styles are linked to each other to this or that extend: Realism with Expressionism, Expressionism with Surrealism, Expressionism and Cubism, etc. Thus, the aforementioned Abstract Expressionism was influenced by Surrealism and Cubism. The features of Cubism can be found in Art Deco and Modernist work, the Czech Cubist group did little more than treat façades with prismatic ornament not unlike that of Expressionism. Realism was rejected by Expressionism depicting subjective emotions rather than objects.
Such term as Cubo-Expressionism, introduced in the early 1970s by art historians and critics, is used to describe a style of Czech avant-garde artof the period 1909-21 in literature, film, dance and cabaret. Cubo-Expressionism term is also used to define a the synthesis of two styles that influenced the development of modern Czech art: French Cubism and German Expressionism.
