A tendency in art of the 19th and 20th centuries, Expressionism, started in the early 20th century when the artists began to reject the values of Classical art. It had great influence on cubism, modern expressionism. Expressionists influenced by Fauves used arbitrary colors depicting subjective interpretations. Simple colors and shapes used by Kandinsky, the leader of one of the Expressionists groups, gradually transformed the current into Abstraction.

Expressionism existed between 1905 and 1930, however Expressionism end is considered to take place in 1920. The style has evolved into a number of another movements and today's artists, as well as the painters of the beginning of the 20th century, apply expressive colors, emotional themes.
