Existential Painting, 1890's, Expressionism. Art Sale

To characterize expressionism painting style it is necessary to say that this is an art style that reflects the artist’s state of mind rather than the reality of the external world. This style of painting generated in 1905, the main participants were Kirchner and Nolde artists that favored the Fauvist style of bright colors. The objective of Expressionism was to express the artist's own sensibility to the world's representation, achieving the highest expression intensity. Originally Expressionism was considered as a German art movement.

As well as many decades ago, today art goers looking for unique artworks and buy art to replenish their private collections. A work of unknown but promising artists can become a profitable investment. Framed art for sale is available via local galleries, exhibitions or online ones. There is also a practice of selling objects of art by auction, known as art sale.

The first really important art collection sold in this way was that of Edward, Earl of Oxford, dispersed by Cock, under the Piazza, Covent Garden, on 8 March 1741/2. The art sale was attended by almost all leading men, the prices varied from five shillings to 165 guineas for Vandyck's group of "Sir Kenelm Digby, lady, and son". The nest art sale took place on March 1754 and it was Dr Richard Mead's extensive collection. The sale of 1786 of the Duchess of Portland's collection is well-known due to the fact that it included the celebrated Portland vase, kept in the British Museum now.

The art sales of the 19th century became the time of new type of collectors, men who had made large fortunes in various industries. They collected the works by the artists of the day mainly, they purchased artworks directly from the easel and from the exhibitions. At that period water-colour drawings were highly appreciated, thus, in 1872 at the Gillott sale 1872 160 examples realized £27,423. Despite of modern artists popularity there were collectors that were appealed by the artworks of the Old Masters.

The greatest art sale in the annals of Great Britain—Bale (1882), Leigh Court (1884), and Dudley (1892) resulted in many very fine works of the Old Masters purchased by eager purchasers at high prices. The characteristic feature of the 19th century last quarter was the demand for female portraits (the South Kensington Exhibitions of 1867 and 1868).

These days art sales are also organized. New York is regarded as the centre of this activity, a new record set by Christie is 491.7 million during their auction of Impressionist and Modern art. Today it is an increasingly competitive market with New York which plays a leading role in the art trade and continues to be such for many years to come.
