Fauvism and German Expressionism
Fauvism was a grouping of early 20th century, it began around 1900 and continued beyond 1910. 1905–1907 were the most fruitful years of the style and in reality it is considered that the movement as such lasted only three years. The first exhibition of «The Wild Beasts» - Les Fauves – took place at the 1905 Salon d'Automne and due to this event the movement gained it's name. "Donatello au milieu des fauves!" exclaimed critic Louis Vauxcelles and his comments were printed on 17 October 1905 in a daily newspaper Gil Blas. The paintings of Fauves were condemned, but some of the works gained favourable attention.
Influenced by Fauvism, German Expressionism used casual colors along with jarring compositions. Being opposed to French Impressionism, Expressionist artists tried to capture subjective emotions and interpretations.
