Expressionism and neo expressionism painting

There were different art movements during XX century and all of them became significant events in the art history of the world. The movement that dominated in painting, literature, drama, poetry, and cinema during the second decade of the 20th century was expressionism. The term «expressionism» was applied regarding the school of Kandinsky, Marc and Nolde artists, regarding music also. Expressionism appeared as a reaction to realism and naturalism, the goal of the movement is to present a world in the light of artists' personal moods, ideas, and emotion. This is achieved via exaggeration of shapes and vivid colour application.

The term itself became current in 1911 and it was used regarding predecessors of the movement such as Georg Büchner's plays of the 1830s and Vincent Van Gogh's paintings of the 1880s, Edvard Munch, August Strindberg, Frank Wedekind. One more name should be mentioned in terms of expressionism movement development – Wassily Kandinsky and the ‘Blue Rider’ group of painters.

During the early and mid-1980s neo expressionism style developed; neo expressionism painting characterizes the expression of violent emotions by means of rough way of materials used. This movement was a reaction against conceptual art and minimalism. This movement affected USA, Germany and Italy, artists created their works in reaction to the techniques broadly used in the 1970s – portraying of recognizable objects in remote, introverted way.

Neo expressionism painting of that time was created basing on such principles as refusal of traditional composition and design standards, primitivist manner of object presentation, the use of vivi colours. The idea of neo expressionism painting united a number of young artists and among the most notable artists of that period were Julian Schnabel, David Salle (US); Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente (Italy); Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz (Germany). In the above mentioned countries neo expressionism painting was also known as new fauvism, punk art, bad painting, transavantgarde, Neue Wilden.

The best of expressionism painting was created by these artists and now we can enjoy their artwork in different galleries throughout the world.
