Dali's and Surrealism
Dali's surrealism. Salvador Dali and surrealism are linked inseparably – the painter's inventive imagination, striking and bizarre images of his works, led to public recognition and surrealism leader status as well as the most famous surrealist artist of the 20th century. Later on the work was copied and reproduced in other media, and even by the artists that were unfamiliar with the original.
Dali's «The Persistence of Memory» was first exhibited in Paris at the Galerie Pierre Colle in 1931, than it was purchased by Julien Levy for $250, and sold again to Mrs. Stanley B Resor in 1933. In 1934 the work was donated to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City to become a part of the exhibition «Dalí and Film».
André Breton Surrealism
There is another figure also closely associated with surrealism movement, Andre Breton, a French writer, poet, and surrealist theorist. André Breton, the founder of surrealism, is known as the author of «The Surrealist Manifesto» of 1924, where surrealism is defined as pure psychic automatism. To the achievements of Breton the principle of automatic writing put into practice is also referred to. Due to his activities surrealism movement became a European one and made one reconsider the origin of human understanding and human perceptions of things and events.
Breton also organized an exhibit on the occasion of the Fortieth Anniversary of Surrealism called «the Homage to Surrealism». The works by Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Enrique Tábara and Eugenio Granell were represented there.
Surrealism had great impact on today's art and the works of contemporary surrealist painters are widely used for decoration purposes.
