Max Ernst German Surrealist of Dada school (1891 – 1976) was a German poet, painter, sculptor, and graphic artist. Ernst is known as one of the leading figures of Dada movement and Surrealism. One of the primary pioneers of Dadaism and Surreal movement, German Surrealist artist of the Dada school Max Ernst studied philosophy in the University at Bonn. His career of the artist was interrupted by his serving in the German army. And after the war Ernst along with another activists formed the Cologne, Germany Dada group. Ernst also became an author of a graphic art technique called frottage, experimented with mixed media. Later Ernst also pioneered grattage in which he troweled pigment from his canvases, and also the technique of decalcomania.Max Ernst is known for his fascination with birds that are prevalent in his work. There were important events in his life related to birds. In 1934 Ernst began to make sculpture and several years later a lot of Ernst's works were acquired by Peggy Guggenheim to be displayed in her new museum in London.
Max Ernst, Dada movement are closely related to Surrealism founded in Paris in 1924. Breton' Surrealist manifesto became a turning point that started the movement development in literature (in England especially) and art. The Manifesto attacked rationalism and emphasized the exploration of hidden and neglected areas of the human psyche.
Surrealism's major achievements were in painting mostly. Surrealism became an inspiration source for the development of another artistic styles and groups. There were artists that created indefinite biomorphic images via which they expressed the unconscious thus practicing emblematic or absolute Surrealism.
