Abstract and Impressionist Art. Abstract Art and Cubism

Impressionism, Cubism to some extend, as well as Romanticism and Expressionism were the currents that influenced the development of abstract art. At the turn of the century the artists obtained independence from the church patronage and Nocturne in Black and Gold: The falling Rocket, (1872) by James McNeill Whistler was early intimations of a new art made by the artist. There were other painters as well, John Constable, J M W Turner, Camille Corot, etc., Paul Cézanne initially classified as an Impressionist but he gradually turned to Cubism which despite of its dependence upon subject matter it became along with Fauvism the art style that gave impetus to the development abstraction in the 20th century. The Cézanne's idea of nature depiction – three solids: cube, sphere and cone – inspired Pablo Picasso to the creation of his first cubist paintings. It was Picasso and Georges Braque who jointly developed analytic cubism about 1908 through 1912, followed by Synthetic cubism.
