History of Painting. Abstract Expressionism
The history of painting consists of several periods each of which can be studied long. Among the most significant events of painting history development was the style known as abstract expressionism. This painting style despite of being great and notable were not considered a separate style, rather than a part of abstract art movement. Often the notions «abstract expressionism» and «abstract art» are confused and understood differently. Thus, abstract expressionism is referred to post-WWII America abstract expressionism painters group which became a reaction to previous abstract styles that didn't fit into social and political situation of that period. Pre-war period abstract artist's artworks represented geometric abstraction, which was replaced by abstract expressionism action painting and "a style of wild gestures". Such way of painting, careless, fast, revealing improvising abilities of the painter was a kind of response to strict logic rules of geometric abstraction.
One of the innovative techniques of abstract expressionism painters was also the way of paint application. The American painter Jackson Pollock became known as the author of such technique when the paint is dripped from the brush or container directly onto the canvas laid flat. Due to such approach Pollock went down into history as "Jack the Dripper". The figure of Jackson Pollolck came to be regarded as influential among his contemporaries and he played rather vital role in American abstract art development making the US and New York recognized in terms of painting art - earlier Paris only was considered to be the world's center of art. After the WWII America managed to change it's status from "under European supervision" country into fully independent one. The US were dominant in this status during several decades after the war.
The paintings of abstract expressionists was not appreciated and understood instantly – the public was mostly disinterested in art at that time. However, American abstract expressionism action painting was of high quality, vitality, bright colored and as a result rather popular among art buyers. The most well-known abstract expressionism painters of that period are Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, Hans Hofmann, many of American abstract expressionists were European immigrants.
Among the works of modern painters one can see the influence of abstract expressionism and many other styles that appeared to change each in previous centuries.
