Abstract Art
All the multiplicity of movements, styles, and schools of 20th century are defined as modern art. The roots of modern art date back to French 19th-century avant-garde painting, when painters became preoccupied with how a subject should be painted, the effects of light on objects. Impressionists and post-impressionists started the new style that influenced much the development of painting in the first decades of the 20th century. The development of science and technology, social changes in the 20th century influenced parallel development of different artistic styles: expressionism, cubism, futurism, surrealism, minimalism and some others.Such movement as abstract art developed under the influence of cubism – Russian artists evolved it into geometrically constructed abstract art. The name of Kandinsky and Kasimir Malevich are closely connected with this non-objective current, the last one started suprematism. Later the style of suprematism would include other Russian painters: Alexander Rodchenko (1891–1956), Liubov Popova (1889–1924), and others. Not Russia only but another countries were involved into the development of Abstract art. The Netherlands the followers of the current created De Stijl ( “The Style”) movement.
French Abstract Art
One of the authors of “The Style” principles Piet Mondrian returned to Paris in 1920 to publish his first major essay Le Néo-Plasticisme where he stated that the range of colors should be narrowed and pure forms should be expressed only. The rise of totalitarianism during the 1930s made artists from Russia, Germany, Holland go to Paris. Abstract had many types than what resulted into artists attempts to analyse the various conceptual and aesthetic groupings.
British abstract art
In 1931 Abstraction-Création was founded, but the artists regroup again because of 1935 worsened political situation. This was also the year when London group of artists had their first exhibition of British Abstract art. Next year exhibition included the works by Piet Mondrian, Joan Miró, Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson.
The new form of Abstract art developed in 1940s and 1950s in the US – Abstract Expressionism. Abstract Expressionists based in New York City mostly aimed to paint abstract and expressive, emotional works. The current also had its groupings, each of which had it's own manner of painting.
